Cursed is an item status effect or attribute that can affect just about any item. Of the three possible attributes (cursed, uncursed, and blessed)  it is the worst possible attribute an item can have.

Obtained From[]

  • Random items found (all items are subject to random attributes);
  • Starting gear (come equipment of characters start cursed);
  • Pouring a bottle of unholy water on an item.

Effects[]

Exact effects should be listed on the specific item, however some of the general effects include:

  • A cursed equippable item (i.e. armour or weapon) cannot be unequipped while it is cursed (this may happen to creatures as well);
  • Reduced damage (unconfirmed);
  • Reduced or changed effectiveness of cursed potions and spells;
  • Changed result of cursed potions and spells.

Identifying[]

Ways to identify if an item has the cursed attribute include:

  • Standing near a friar;
  • Having a feline or canine pet walk near the item (spider monkeys cannot detect cursed items);
  • Reading a scroll of identify;
  • Casting the spell of identify;
  • Learning the dweomery talent;
  • Wearing an amulet of dweomery;
  • Equipping/using the item (not recommended). Although the easiest, it is most dangerous method of identifying a cursed item cursed items cannot be removed normally. Especially dangerous when dealing with cursed weapons and wands, inhibiting the player to equip better weapons;
  • Having a level 3 commerce skill. Cursed items will have a slightly lower value than its uncursed counterparts (e.g. an uncursed scroll of identify may have a value of 20, while an unidentified scroll of identify may have a value of 18).

Removing[]

The cursed attribute can be removed from an item in a number of ways, changing the status of the attribute to uncursed. Methods of removing the curse from an item include:

If the curse cannot be removed with one of the above methods, having the item forcefully removed from the character while leaving the curse on the item is another option. Methods include:

  • Water nymphs will usually steal currently equipped items (not always, may take a few tries).
  • Rubbing a oil lamp, will (only) remove wielded items, such as weapons and wand. Although with a chance of summoning a djinni in the process.
  • Pouring a potion of oil onto a held cursed item can cause it to become too slippery to hold onto for a short while (two weapons/wands can be dropped during this short period of time; when the oil effect wears off the message "you feel your grip tightens" will appear).
  • Equipping gauntlets of fumbling, which will gradually drop any weapon or wand the player is wielding.

A final method of removing a cursed item from a character is to destroy the item outright. Destruction methods include:

Tips[]

  • Exception to the rule, a cursed oil lamp may be equipped or removed normally;
  • Acquiring the paid services of a trader via identify will not reveal the cursed nature of an item.
