Food items are consumable items which can be eaten to reduce hunger, with some foods having a chance of additional effects. Eating food requires spending a number of turns dependent on the size of the food.

Quality of Food[]

Most foods comes in various levels of freshness, although some do not spoil over time. Fruit and monster innards will always spoil. The level of freshness of foods that do spoil:

  1. Fresh (full calories);
  2. Normal (full calories);
  3. Old (full calories);
  4. Smelly (reduced calories - full calories for fruit, chance of poison damage and sickness);
  5. Rotten (reduced calories, damage and higher chance of sickness). Rotten food will eventually rot away and disappear.

Note: Poison resistance does not protect against the chance of damage and sickness inflicted from eating smelly and rotten food.

Goo, Innards, and Meat[]

Valid as of v1.34

Innards, goo, and meat are food items that have a chance of being dropped as loot when a creature is slain. Spoiled and rotten food items, regardless of type or poison resistance, will always damage the player and has a good chance of inflicting sickness. Having the gastronomy skill may increase the frequency of these food items to be dropped. Innards, goo, and meat are non-vegetarian products usually cannot be eaten by herbivores, unless mentioned otherwise in the notes.

When in doubt: if the source is from a moving creature, it's meat. If not, it's a plant/vegetable.

In instances where there are two entries for the same creature, it usually refers to creatures with difference sizes, e.g. a small/hatchling creatures and their normal/adult sized version. The game sometimes does not differentiate the name of innards, good, or meat dropped, only a difference in calories and weight.

Despite the value; goo, innards, and meat will always sell for 1 gold at the emporium.

Cooked and Chilled[]

Some raw food can be cooked with fire resulting in a cooked food item with higher calories. Food items when exposed to cold will result in chilled food. The calorie content remains the same, however it has a slower rate of spoilage. In both instances, only meat and innards may be cooked or chilled. Other food item types either have no effect or may be destroyed in the process.

Tips[]

Hunger Related[]

  • Important tip! Putting food items that spoil into a bag will prevent the food from disappearing after spoiling. It will remain at rotten status, which later can be used to create pies at the baker. Note: Do not equip the bag. The bag must be unequipped and the player must manually add food items into the bag (add stuff);
  • Wearing an amulet slow digestion will slow the rate of turns required before getting hungry.
  • The gastronomy talent increases the frequency of monster innards, meat, and goo are dropped by slain creatures, may prove useful early in the game. It is recommended for new players who still have trouble dealing with starvation. In deeper levels where food is plentiful or finding a baker, will eventually make this talent obsolete.

Pet Related[]

  • Hungry pets will eat anything edible left on the floor, including potions and mushrooms. Make sure that any wanted food items are picked up before they have a chance to do so. The food can always be fed to the pet manually if so desired;
  • If fed manually, pets will finish any food given to them in one serving, unless full. Conversely, pets who eat food left on the ground, will only eat until satiated and will leave leftovers. It may prove efficient to drop food items with high calories on the floor for hungry pets;
  • Food items with high calories and an added bonus e.g. hill giants innards +1 STR; perhaps are best given to a favourite pet as they are able to eat it in a single serving;
  • Hatchling pets, if given food items that inflict direct damage e.g. acid blob goo, will usually die after eating it.

Other[]

  • Eating food while full will result in choking. An amulet of magical breathing may negate this effect;
  • When not satiated, it is generally best to eat safe monster innards as soon as they are dropped, especially those that can bestow useful intrinsic abilities;
  • Creatures who do not drop food items when slain: elementals, gargoyles, skeletons, vortexes.
