The sanctuary is run by the friar, a brown robed trader who can be found in random locations throughout the dungeon. His room appears as a temple with rows of pews, with him standing at the front at the pulpit. The friar will appear as an ankh icon on the map and mini-map.
Location[]
- Randomly located, starting from depths of 200 feet. More than one friar may be present in the dungeon. His temple will always be located on the furthest right side of a floor. Although some (rarely) can be located on the left side, if accessed from a lower or higher floor.
Services[]
Prices will vary based on the charisma stat and commerce skill:
- Identify (free) - Standing near the friar will reveal the blessed, uncursed, and cursed status of all items the character or creature is carrying;
- Blessing (20-80 gold) - Cursed items will become uncursed; uncursed items will become blessed. Standard price is around 50 gold;
- Prayer of Protection (90-375 gold) - Casts a spell of protection on the character adding +3 to AC. This effect is temporary however it seems to last quite a long number of turns. Paying for this service while already protected will increase the duration of the spell;
- Holy Book (not for sale) - Though technically not an offered service, the friar has a holy book on his altar that when read gives the player the choice of having a different deity (e.g. a wizard reading the book may be given the option to worship the Norse Gods or another god; only one god presented; unclear if different different holy books offer different gods);
- Picking up the book and reading it will incur a library fee. The amount of the fee varies, based on the player's charisma and commerce stat. If the player does not pay this fee, then the friar will turn hostile and attack.
- Warning! Accidently attacking the friar and making peace (paying 100 gold) will double the price of future services.
Loot[]
"As you approach the desecrated altar, you feel guilty. The store seems abandoned."
- Brown robe (always worn, blessed, +2 enchantment);
- Chance to wield a mace (blessed, +1 enchantment);
- Chance to wield a wand of magic missile;
- Chance to drop a bit of friar innards;
- Holy book (on the altar);
- All the gold coins the player has used for the friar's services so far.
Traits[]
The friar has been observed to have the following traits or behaviours:
- Alignment: Neutral;
- Alignment: Friendly;
- Movement: Energizes much quicker (from brown robe);
- Resistance: Some magic.

List of all names the friar has (because why not?):
- Allliam;
- Artholomew;
- Berne;
- Georaham;
- Gilel;
- Isaniel;

Tips[]
- When looking for the friar, climbing down floors and only exploring the right side of the map, may prove useful in finding him;
- Increasing the charisma stat and especially the commerce skill, will significantly lower the prices of his services to the lowest price of 20 gold per item;
- Dropping a chest near the friar may provide a good place to store loot.
Trivia[]
- The undead are not effected by the holiness of the altar. Some may even be found sleeping there.
