A spellbook appears as a giant book that can be read to memorize the spell in its title. The color of the book may indicate which spell alignment it belongs to. The speed and success rate of learning a spell by reading a spellbook depends on the character's intelligence and/or wisdom stats as well as the level of the spell.
Unidentified[]
Unlike other items, the unidentified spellbook does slightly hint to the contents of the spellbook. Spellbook colours/type directly corresponds to the spell alignment:
Dark Spellbooks[]
Dark spellbooks appear to reflect a specific darkish colour. A moon symbol will always be displayed on its front cover.

- Iron spellbook.
Death Spellbooks[]
Death spellbooks appear to refer to conditions reflecting decay. A skull symbol will always be displayed on its front cover.

- Wrinkled spellbook.
Life Spellbooks[]
Life spellbooks appear refer to a specific colour. An ankh symbol will always be displayed on its front cover.

- Orange spellbook;
- Pink spellbook;
- Yellow spellbook.
Light Spellbooks[]
Light spellbooks appear to (usually) refer to a material type or light-related. A sun symbol will always be displayed on its front cover.

- Silver spellbook;

- White spellbook.
Gold Spellbooks[]
The gold spellbook is a light spellbook that may be directly acquired by putting in any spellbook (including holy books) into a Midas bag. Doing so will allow the player to have an ample supply of a particular light spell. If lucky, the gold spellbook will contain hard to find light spells, such as the identify spell.
Alignment[]
[Tested] Character alignment will influence the drop rate of spellbooks in accordance to the alignment, increased chance if the same alignment, decreased chance if opposite:
- Lawful Good: Will find more light spellbooks, will find less dark spellbooks;
- Chaotic Good: Will find more life spellbooks, will find less death spellbooks;
- Neutral: Unbiased.
- Lawful Evil: Will find more dark spellbooks, will find less light spellbooks;
- Chaotic Evil: Will find more death spellbooks, will find less life spellbooks.
Dweomery[]
Blessed[]
- Reading a blessed spellbook will always successfully memorize a spell, similar to the Level 2 Literacy talent;
- Speed may still be subject to intelligence, the higher the intelligence, the faster (high level spellbooks will always be read slower) and will be faster than an uncursed spellbook;
- The rate of use of the spellbook before it becomes worn from continued use will also be decreased.
Uncursed[]
- Reading an uncursed spellbook will be subject to the minimal intelligence requirement of the spellbook. If the intelligence level is not high enough, memorizing the spell will fail and inflict confusion on the player;
- Speed of memorizing the spell may still be subject to intelligence and will be slower than a blessed spellbook.
Cursed[]
- Reading a cursed spellbook will always fail if read and will inflict confusion on the player.
Condition[]
A spellbook will eventually wear out when read frequently. The condition of a spellbook are as the following from best to worst:
- No description (normal);
- Faintly readable;
- Worn.
Note[]
- A worn spellbook can no longer be read for spells and cannot be recovered. Blessing a spellbook may increase the number of times it can be re-read;
- A spellbook can still suffer burn damage. This may decrease the usage of the spellbook before it is worn.

Tips[]
- Wisdom will dictate how long the spell remain in the player's memory;
- Reading a spellbook while wearing a pair of black spectacles will always be successful in memorizing a spell, regardless of stats or uncursed/cursed dweomery;
- Reading a spellbook with a level 2 literacy talent will always be successful in memorizing a spell, regardless of stats or uncursed/cursed dweomery;
- A spellbook zapped with a wand of cancellation will turn into a blank spellbook, which cannot be used for anything else;
- Using a potion of restore ability of a worn spellbook does not restore its condition.
